Anne Hathaway: Taylor Swift is a force of nature

Printable version

Anne Hathaway wants to be in Taylor Swift's crew.

The Bad Blood singer has become known for her harem of famous female friends and it seems like Oscar-winner Anne, 32, wouldn't mind being part of her squad too.

'She just seems to be following her heart. I met her - I hope it's OK to say this - when she and Jake [Gyllenhaal] were together,' she told the British edition of Glamour. 'She was 20 at the time, and we hung out one night. I was like, 'You are a magnificent creature.' She was on fire and I've watched her become this force of nature.'

Anne has starred alongside Jake, 34, twice in her career. First in 2005 classic Brokeback Mountain and again in 2010 romantic drama Love & Other Drugs. The actor dated Taylor, 25, briefly before suddenly calling time on their relationship in 2011. She is now happily dating DJ Calvin Harris while Jake is believed to be single.

Anne has a good relationship with her former co-star, but Jake isn't the only colleague she stays in touch with. The actress is also good friends with her Devil Wears Prada co-star Emily Blunt, and she admitted to the outlet that she is trying to set up a hobby group with her and fellow A-lister Jessica Chastain.

'I'm trying right now to start a book club with Em and Jessica, because they're working on a movie together. I said, 'Let's all read this book!' But I'm not working and they are, so it's not going very well,' she laughed.

Anne's most recent movie was Interstellar, which also starred Jessica. While she still gets good roles, she admits she has missed out on parts because they've gone to younger actresses.

'I can't complain about it because I benefitted from it. When I was in my early twenties, parts would be written for women in their fifties and I would get them,' she said. 'And now I'm in my early thirties and I'm like, 'Why did that 24-year-old get that part?' I was that 24-year-old once, I can't be upset about it, it's the way things are.'

Scouting For Girls have unveiled the brilliant new video for their single Life's Too Short, watch on YouTube here. Life's Too Short - available to download and stream now - has a joyous, optimistic bounce that is classic Scouting For Girls.

'People have said it's like old Scouting For Girls, or the best bits of our old songs rolled into one. The best of everything we've done before,' says the band's frontman Roy Stride. 'I love that!'

Life's Too Short is the first to be take from the million-selling trios new album Still Thinking About You, released October 16th on East West Records and available to pre-order from iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Amazon (signed). A return to the immaculate indie pop of their triple-platinum debut album but with a more natural, fresher sound, Still Thinking About You is the west London band's first album of new material since 2012 and their first for new label East West Records.

The band wrote, recorded and produced Still Thinking About You themselves, on their terms, on their own expense, at their own pace. 'It was a really unforced, natural process,' reflects Ellard. 'It was just done how it should have been done. Good songs, simple production, really good fun. And we rediscovered that buzz between the three of us.'

Only once they had a bunch of songs with which they were happy ' and that includes Christmas In The Air (Tonight), a seasonal smash-in-waiting ' did they think about which record label might release it. Presented with an album that was completely done and dusted, right down to the artwork, East West jumped at the chance to partner with the band.

'On Still Thinking About You, we've embraced what people love about this band,' concludes Stride, 'and we've made the ultimate Scouting For Girls record.'

Pink 'grossed out by VMAs'

Printable version

Pink supposedly felt the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards were just plain 'gross'.

The 35-year-old Just Give Me a Reason singer watched the raunchy awards show on television this year.

But the 2015 MTV VMAs, hosted by Miley Cyrus, turned out to be a huge disappointment for Pink, as she felt many of the event's outtakes were staged.

'I felt embarrassed and sad,' she allegedly wrote on her private @bethwsh Instagram account. 'And old. We're getting old.

But in all seriousness; I felt sad because music is supposed to inspire. It saved my life. This trash won't save any kids life. In a world that is even scarier and with lives still worth saving, who will stand up and have soul? Disenfranchised to say the least. Let down by my industry peers. Beside Macklemore and phar. and bieber (pre-sob fest) and the weekend, Tori Kelly was dope too. The rest was gross and embarrassing and hard for this aging pop star to believe. (sic)'

The 2015 MTV VMAs received some of the lowest viewership ratings in broadcast history. Many critics have panned last Sunday's show as inauthentic. Controversial moments include when Nicki Minaj verbally attacked Miley live on air, calling the Wrecking Ball pop star a 'b***h'. Justin Bieber also cried after performing his new track What Do You Mean, while Kanye West announced his future plans to run for political office as the President of the United States of America. Demi Lovato put on a super sexy performance with Iggy Azalea and Miley also wore next to nothing onstage.

Avril and Chad 'struggled with romance'

Printable version

Avril Lavigne never found Chad Kroeger attractive, according to reports.

The pair announced their split on Wednesday after just two years of marriage and now details have emerged about just what caused the pair's union to break down.

An insider told Radar Online Avril always struggled with the romance side of her relationship with Nickleback frontman Chad, and the lack of intimacy in their marriage is said to have been one of the main factors in their split.

'Avril fell in love with Chad for his artistic self and because he treated her like a princess, but the romance was almost non-existent from the beginning,' the source explained.

'Everyone advised her that you have to have passion to make a marriage work, but she didn't want to listen because she was very intent on becoming this music industry power couple.'

The pair have been surrounded by rumours about the state of their marriage for months. But now Avril has made her single status official, the Complicated singer is said to be extremely relieved.

'She is more than okay right now, though, especially now that she is no longer in a bitter and sexless marriage with a man that she did not find attractive to begin with,' the insider added.

'All that the two of them did in the past couple of months was fight because his career is basically over and he has been trying to stop her from reinventing herself like she is trying to do.'

It was something of a different story in the statement Avril released announcing the end of the marriage.

Alongside a picture from their wedding day, Avril wrote on Instagram: 'It is with a heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today.

'Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments. We are still and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other. To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support. (sic)"

Black Sabbath bid goodbye with farewell shows

Printable version

Ozzy Osbourne's groundbreaking band Black Sabbath have announced a farewell tour.

The heavy metal group has been active since 1986 and are responsible for classics like Paranoid and Never Say Die!
However, Black Sabbath is putting touring to rest, as they are planning to bid the road goodbye forever with one final concert series.

'It started nearly five decades ago with a crack of thunder, a distant bell ringing and then that monstrous riff that shook the earth. The heaviest rock sound ever heard,' a statement on the band's website reads. 'In that moment Heavy Metal was born, created by a young band from Birmingham, England barely out of their teens. Now it ENDS, the final tour by the greatest Metal Band of all time, BLACK SABBATH.'

The release also assured fans the upcoming shows will 'surpass all previous tours with their most mesmerising production ever'.

Lead singer Ozzy, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler will be hitting the road together for the farewell concert series, entitled The End.

It's unclear who will tour in original drummer Bill Ward's place, as he is not involved in The End. The drummer had a falling out with Black Sabbath and revealed in an interview with the Rolling Stone earlier this year he wasn't even sure if he is still a member of the band.

"I wish them well, and I have no further comment," Bill told the Rolling Stone when asked about the forthcoming concerts.
The End tour kicks off in Omaha, Nebraska on January 20, 2016. So far there are shows lined up across North and South America, New Zealand and Australia. More concert dates will be announced next month.

Prince raves about HitNRun producer

Printable version

Prince was blown away by his 25-year-old HitNRun co-producer Joshua Welton's talent.

The 57-year-old musical legend is famous for working alone on his records. But for the first time in 40 years he decided to enlist somebody else's help on the upcoming HitNRun and that person is Joshua Welton, the husband of Prince band 3rdEyeGirl's drummer Hannah.

'I just met him as a person first. I didn't know what he could do until we got in the studio,' Prince told USA Today. 'This is the first time I've let someone make a record for me. Josh hears music like I do.'

While Joshua was somewhat daunted to be working with such a legendary singer, he quickly learned that Prince is not like many other musicians in the industry.

His lack of ego was something Joshua found particularly refreshing.

'He's not a dude who says, 'I have to play something' on every song,' Joshua said.

Since teaming up with Prince, Joshua has been educated in various aspects of musical history.

And the young musician admits he has seen certain things in a new light since working with the Purple Rain star.

'My opinion of cool has definitely changed,' Joshua said. 'When you've got somebody who can hear the flowers bloom, you listen to music in a different way. I gotta at least tell him what kind of flower it is!'

HitNRun will be released on Jay Z's streaming service Tidal September 7 and fans can purchase a hard copy of the offering in CD form starting September 15.

5SOS: 1D taught us well

Printable version

5 Seconds of Summer have learnt a lot from One Direction.

The two bands are good friends, and 5 Seconds of Summer have toured with the Brit group on three occasions.

As One D fans prepare to say goodbye to the boys, 5SOS will no doubt be able to fill the gap they leave when they take a break next March. Luckily the Australian band have picked up plenty of tips from them.

"Their story is very different to ours. Their type of music is very different to ours as well. It's a different type of journey, but to see how they've done it and the way they treat their touring crew is something we've learnt from. We just want everyone that works for us to be happy, and we wouldn't have known how to do that unless we'd toured with One Direction," they praised to Notion magazine.

5SOS have been making waves in the industry since 2013, dropping their debut self-titled album last year.

Made up of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin, the boys no longer worry about what their fans and press label them as.

"It's all about not caring what people think and say. It's like a f**k you to people who say you can't be what you are. And to represent that, I don't think we should carry on asking people not to call us a boy band. We learnt our instruments, we learnt how to write songs from scratch, we love performing live and we love f**king rocking out - that's what we do, so at this stage, people can call us whatever they want," they insisted.

Meat Loaf: I was spitting blood every night

Printable version

Meat Loaf can't understand why people have been hostile since he sang through a vocal haemorrhage.

The American musician is famous the world over thanks to his powerful voice, producing hits such as Bat Out of Hell and I'd Do Anything For Love. But having such impressive singing skills hasn't been without its problems.

"Yeah, when you're 26, your voice has a certain timbre. When you're 68, your voice no longer has that timbre. I've had three vocal surgeries now, and three sinus surgeries. Adele cancelled a tour with a haemorrhaging vocal cord, I did a tour in Australia with a haemorrhaging vocal cord. I was spitting blood every night on stage," he told Billboard. "And I've got nothing but grief and major hostility. I gave those people everything I had and more. I had flown 44 people to Australia, we're all sitting there. Insurance wouldn't cover the band and everybody going back, so I just said, 'OK, let's go.' In New Zealand at the last show, I was warming up, and it was like you're slicing a vegetable and you cut your finger really bad and it's bleeding everywhere, that's how blood was coming out of my throat. It was just running out of my throat."

Meat Loaf has been performing for decades now, first playing shows with his band in 1967. It isn't just music which has made him famous; the star is also a fully-fledged actor. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is arguably his most popular flick and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Meat Loaf hinted at how the cast of the movie have celebrated the occasion.

"I just flew to LA and we did an Entertainment Weekly shoot with Tim [Curry], Susan [Sarandon], Barry [Bostwick], me, and Pat Quinn. And I just got an email, Entertainment Weekly wants an interview with me, and Jimmy Fallon wants me to come on The Tonight Show, so we'll see if we can work those in," he smiled.

Hamilton Announces Broadway Cast Recording

Atlantic Records will release the original Broadway cast recording of the hit musicalHamilton, now in previews at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The album will be available for pre-order August 7 (the day after the musical's official Broadway opening) in advance of a fall release. The official release date will be announced in the coming weeks.

The album is executive produced by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter, founding members of the Grammy Award-winning hip-hop band, The Roots. "Ten minutes into Hamilton, though, I was just so stunned. It was such a sucker punch," says Thompson, reflecting on seeing the show for the first time. Trotter adds that the show "can be your introduction to hip-hop — on Broadway. And it's a valid one. It's a credible one."

Directed by Thomas Kail and inspired by Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton explores the life of the American founding father and first Secretary of the Treasury, as well as his experiences as an orphan of the British West Indies who immigrated to the 13 Colonies and helped shape the United States of America. The show, which had its world premiere at the Public Theater, features a hip-hop score by Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also stars as the title character (Javier Muñoz takes on the role of Alexander Hamilton once a week).

The featured cast also includes Leslie Odom Jr. (Aaron Burr), Drama Desk Award winner Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler), Phillipa Soo (Eliza Hamilton), Jonathan Groff (King George), Daveed Diggs (Marquis De Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson), Christopher Jackson (George Washington), Anthony Ramos (John Laurens, Phillip Hamilton), Okieriete Onaodowan (Hercules Mulligan, James Madison), and Jasmine Cephas Jones (Peggy Shuyler, Maria Reynolds).

Mark Ronson 'going all out for 40th'

Printable version

Mark Ronson will reportedly host his 40th birthday party on a posh 100-acre estate.

The producer-and-musician has had one of the most successful years in his career, as he achieved his first number single in the UK and the US with catchy track Uptown Funk featuring Bruno Mars. The star's album Uptown Special also peaked at the top spot on UK charts.

Mark turns 40 years old on September 4 and in light of all his achievements, the star is supposedly set to go all out as he enters a fresh new decade in life.

'It's going to be the party of the year,' a source told British newspaper The Sun. 'Mark is one of the most well-connected men in music and has invited the great and the good of his showbiz pals.

'He's had one of the greatest years of his career and wants to top it off with a party no one will forget.'

It's claimed he is renting Soho Farmhouse, a 100-acre estate in Oxfordshire, England, in its entirety for the celebration. Soho Farmhouse is a members only club in the middle of the countryside which allows visitors to book beautifully renovated cabins. Apparently there are 40 cabins on the property and Mark has rented them all out for his guests to stay in.

After their massive party in the woods, it's claimed Mark has hired luxury buses to transport partygoers from Soho Farmhouse to Festival No.6 in Portmeirion, North Wales, where he is due to DJ.

Motorhead abandon another show

Printable version

Could it be the end of live performing for Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister?

For the third time in a week, the band had to curtail or cancel a show due to Kilmister's health. Motorhead cut their Salt Lake City show after four songs last Thursday night blaming the altitude of the city for making Lemmy short of breath. They then went on to outright cancel their Friday night appearance in Denver as the city is about 1,000 feet higher than Salt Lake City.

It was expected, though, that everything would be back to normal on Tuesday in San Antonio, a city that is less than 1,000 feet above sea level, but it wasn't to be so. Just three songs into their show, Lemmy told the crowd 'I just can't do it' and left the stage.

He came out a bit later to address the fans saying 'You are one of the best gigs in America, and I would love to play for you, but I can't, so please accept my apologies. Next time, all right?'

A representative for Motorhead went on the band's Facebook page on Wednesday saying that the situation in San Antonio was a direct result of the thin air that Kilmister had experienced over the weekend:

As you might have heard, Motörhead again had to abbreviate a performance due to Lemmy not feeling well. This is a DIRECT follow-on from the altitude issues in Colorado, and clearly, Lemmy tried to get back at it too quickly. For this reason, Motörhead will not play in San Antonio tonight, but the show will still go on with Saxon headlining. Lemmy will resume duties the moment he is PROPERLY rested and firing on all cylinders again. The legendary Motörheadbanger patience is much appreciated, and the band send their deepest thanks. More details will be released soon.

Bieber: VMA performance was overwhelming

Printable version

Justin Bieber has explained why he cried at the MTV VMAs on Sunday.

Things got emotional at the awards show when the 21-year-old broke down in tears at the end of his performance. Now the star has opened up about the moment, explaining why it all became too much at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

"It was so overwhelming for me, everything. I missed some cues so I was a little disappointed at that,' he told talk show host Jimmy Fallon. 'Honestly, I just wasn't expecting them to support me in the way they did. Last time I was at an awards show, I was booed.'

Justin was presented with the Milestone Award at the Billboards in 2013 but was heckled by the crowd when he went up to collect his prize.

He hardly has a squeaky-clean past, with several run-ins with the law, but now Justin has turned his life around and is focusing on his career and making his fans proud.

'I think it's just like I've worked so hard at this album and at becoming the man I want to become, and then stepping into situations, you just can't help but feel judged," he continued.

"So I was just feeling judged and wanting to win so badly, and wanting to do what I love so badly that I just put everything on the line. And I think that that was what was so special about the emotional moment at the end, that it was authentic. It was real. I was really just wanting it so bad.'

Justin's song with Skrillex and Diplo, Where Are Ü Now, picked up the best visual effects award at the show on Sunday.

Enrique Iglesias: Perfect relationships don't exist

Printable version

Enrique Iglesias believes his realistic view of relationships means he and Anna Kournikova won't be the next big showbiz breakup.

It's been a bad year for famous couples, with Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger announcing their separation yesterday and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner and Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale splitting within the past few months.

Enrique and tennis ace Anna have been dating since 2001 but are yet to tie the knot. However, the singer believes their foundation is completely solid.

"You go through your good times, you go through your bad times," he admitted to British newspaper Metro when asked how he's avoided the showbiz pitfalls. "It's a tough thing for me to believe there's such a thing as the perfect relationship. I don't think that exists."

Proving the couple that plays together stays together, Enrique, 40, and 34-year-old Anna even engage in the odd tennis match. The crooner insists playing a pro is fun and even likens it to "playing against a wall".

But there was a time before Enrique was all loved up and travelled the world to adoring groupies. While it was fun in the moment, he doesn't miss those days.

"One time, I opened my suitcase and it was full of panties," he recalled. "I don't know how it happened. Although it was funny, I felt violated. They were clean, there was only one skid mark... I'm kidding!"

No doubt there are plenty of fans who do miss Enrique's single days though. The handsome star is currently enjoying success with his latest single El Perdón (Forgiveness) with Nicky Jam, which is sure to get hearts racing.

Lionel Richie: Watching Nicole struggle was heartbreaking

Printable version

Lionel Richie found it "cataclysmic" watching his daughter Nicole battle drugs.

The music icon and his ex-wife Brenda Harvey informally adopted Nicole when she was just two years old, making it official when she was nine.

Nicole had a turbulent few years in the early noughties, which saw her arrested on numerous occasions and checking into rehab in 2003 after being detained for driving with a revoked license and possession of heroin.

For Lionel, it was almost unbearable to watch.

"Nicole became a huge star herself in [TV show] The Simple Life with Paris Hilton. She fell off the rails and she got into drugs and the wrong kind of friends and was arrested for possession of heroin and went into rehab. That's a fairly cataclysmic thing for any father to have to watch his beautiful, young daughter go through," he sighed to Piers Morgan in an episode of his Life Stories series, which airs tomorrow evening.

"I got a phone call and she said: 'Dad, I need help, I don't want to be the third one [of my friends to die].' And I said: 'I am with you' and I cancelled the tour. I said: 'Me and your mother', who didn't get along that well, 'Me and your mother are checking into rehab with you.'"

Luckily Nicole has left her personal problems in the past and is now leading a successful career as a designer, as well as being a mother to kids Harlow, seven, and Sparrow, five, with husband Joel Madden.

And Lionel continues to croon his way through music after having won over ladies around the world with tracks such as Endless Love and Three Times a Lady. In fact, the second has helped the star seduce many women, but he isn't often intimate with the sound of his own voice in the background.

"Absolutely not. You can't even get into scandal with this. Let me tell you this, now wait, in the early days of Commodores maybe it was in the background," he laughed, referring to his band.

"It would be Three Times A Lady. I'm no fool, because that was our first worldwide hit."

Lovato: Iggy track is amazing

Printable version

Iggy Azalea agreed to collaborate with Demi Lovato before even hearing the song.

Demi and Iggy delighted fans when they took to the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night to perform Demi's song Cool For The Summer.

The pair also feature together on Kingdom, which features on Demi's album Confident, and the singer has revealed just how quickly the collaboration with Iggy came together.

'When we finally made the decision of which songs were making the album I said 'OK I want her on this one.' So I called her and was like, 'Hey will you do a song?',' Demi told MTV. 'And she's like, 'Yeah sure I'll go into the studio tonight.'

'I was like, 'Do you want to hear it first?' She's like 'No it's cool,' Demi said. 'I'm like you're an amazing friend and I love you.'

Demi and Iggy have become so close over recent months that the Fancy singer even invited her pal to be a bridesmaid at her upcoming wedding to Nick Young.

And Demi is thrilled that her collaboration with Iggy came out so well, as their friendship translates incredibly well into song form.

'I was a fan of her before we were friends, so I feel like I knew what it would sound like,' she said. 'And I was just excited to hear it back, it was so much more than I even expected.'

Demi, 23, revealed the sexy cover art for her new album a few days ago, on which she is photographed wearing a dominatrix-like outfit with a spiky shirt and black razor sharp fingernails.

The Former Disney star claims she wanted to go a little more Gothic with her new LP because she is experiencing a particularly fierce stage of life right now.

'The album is called Confident," she told ET Online earlier this month. "And I wanted something that was going to best represent the album title, where I'm at today and the music.

"I've never been more confident in my life and it was the perfect album title.'

Sam Smith: I just feel stronger

Earlier this morning Sam Smith spoke to Radio 2's Ken Bruce from the BBC Radio Theatre in London, where he was soundchecking ahead of his live performance this evening ' BBC Radio 2: In Concert - an exclusive intimate gig available live on BBC Radio 2, BBC Red Button and online at bbc.co.uk/radio2 from 8pm this evening.

Sam also performed his hits 'Like I Can', and 'Stay With Me' live into Ken's show.

Talking from the BBC Radio Theatre in London:

Sam: I'm excited to be here, it's such a beautiful little venue.

Ken: Give me a picture of what you've been doing since Christmas last year.

Sam: I had the GRAMMYs in February which was unreal. I've done two American tours, one throat operation on the vocal cords. I bought a house, which is amazing. I lost weight, that's probably a good thing. I was really fat before. Trust me, I was fat.

Ken: There must have been a tremendous amount of worry when you had to have that throat operation?

Sam: It was. It was a worry just because I hate cancelling shows and disappointing people and that was horrible, but in terms of my health and my voice it was actually a massive blessing in disguise. I went to the throat doctor who looked after Adele and saved Julie Andrews voice and I was in really good hands. So I never doubted that my voice would come back, it was just the pain of having to reschedule stuff. And even now it's just changed the way I feel about my voice. I'm a bit more scared than normal which is a good thing I guess.

Ken: Has it changed the way you sing?

Sam: I just feel stronger in the way that I'm singing. So yeah, it's more reliable.

Presented by Jo Whiley live from the BBC Radio Theatre in London, In Concert will be available live on Radio 2, BBC Red Button and online atbbc.co.uk/radio2 from 8pm.

Radio 2 In Concert with Sam Smith will be available to view on BBC Red Button until Wednesday 9th September.

How a well-liked Irish woman ended up homeless and frozen to death in New York

Grace FarrellPhoto by: Irish Times

On February 19th, 2011, 35-year old Grace Farrell was found frozen to death in an alcove of St. Brigid’s Catholic Church in the East Village.

Now new details of how and why she died have emerged in a new radio documentary on RTE in Ireland which was broadcast this Saturday.

The homeless Irish woman had emigrated to the United States in the mid-1990s to make a new life and to meet her mother.

The Irish Times reports that her mother was unable to care for her. After an initial attempt at adoption and then a second foster-care placement attempt, Grace at St Vincent’s, a Daughters of Charity children’s home in Drogheda, at the age of seven. Her mother, meanwhile, had left for the States.

Emmanuel Touhey, who was at the orphanage with Grace, remembers her as a ‘shy but fun-loving child.”

“She had a very loud and deep laugh, and she would be very mischievous, and she could have this terrible serious frown, and then this great guffaw would come out of her,” he says.

“I think she enjoyed her own company, but she also craved the company of others. You know, just like we all did, she wanted to feel loved and she wanted to feel secure.”

When she was 11 or 12, Grace went to live with her paternal grandparents nearby and experienced a “happy and stable period” for a time.

“Her grandparents gave her such a wonderful life, they really did. They were so good to her. I mean, she really wanted for nothing,” her cousin Diane recalled.

Near the end of her teenage years, Grace’s inner turmoil began to show, mainly through alcohol abuse.

“There was an instance one time when we had to bring her home because she was that drunk,” says Shirley, a friend.

“She had a bottle in her hand, and she fell and cut her whole hand, and it kind of did get to the stage where it was a lot of work to be out with her, because you were just constantly minding her, and I think that’s probably why we drifted apart.”

After she left school, Grace moved to England for a year, before returning to Ireland. She then decided to move to the United States to find her mother.

“It was always a big gap in Grace’s life,” says Shirley. “It was something that she always talked about, her mother in America, and I knew – I think we all knew – that she was going to go and try and find her mam and get closure.”
Grace would find her mother in the Bronx, but things did not go well.

Albert Muñiz met Grace one day on the Lower East Side.

“It must have been sometime around seven o’clock on July 4th, and I went out to get cigarettes,” he says. “I see these girls kicking her. She was on the floor, trembling, you know, and I said, ‘Hey, what are you doing? Are you crazy? Don’t be hurting her.’

“But then I walked away, and they walked away, and they left her there, but then something told me to just turn around. So she stood up, and she started trembling, really trembling, and she was all wet, and I said, ‘Excuse me, young lady, do you need help . . . Are you okay?’ She said, ‘No . . . and I do need help.’ ”

Albert took her in, and they formed a relationship. On September 20th, 1998, Grace had a son, whom they named Oliver.
Grace seemed to be settling down for a while, but she soon began drinking again, with homeless people in a nearby park.
Muñiz says she would sometimes go missing for weeks, even months. “She would disappear . . . I had to get flyers with her picture and go all over the East Side.”

On the night of February 19, 2011, the coldest day of that New York winter, Grace ended up in Tompkins Square Park on the Lower East Side, an area popular with homeless people in the city.

She settled into the alcove of a doorway outside St Brigid’s church, lying down on a couple of flimsy pieces of cardboard.
Fr Patrick Moloney, a native of Co Limerick, has lived near Tompkins Square Park for nearly 60 years. He said he used to see Grace pass his door regularly, and he remembers the day clearly.

“It was an extremely cold day. I wasn’t at all surprised,” he says about hearing the news of her death. “All I was told was that she was found in the doorway.”

“There’s no common denominator here,” he said, speaking of those who hit rock bottom.

“It reaches out to all kinds of people. So many of them will get that feeling of euphoria, and then they die of exposure, because they don’t feel the cold creeping in on them. That is very possibly what happened to that dear lady. She probably went in her sleep very peacefully – and tragically.”

In Ireland Grace’s friends were shocked at the news of her death.

“A headline with ‘woman freezes to death’ just stabs at the heart of anybody who loved and knew her,” says Diane. “She wasn’t homeless; she chose to be away from her home, and I know her family came from that point of view as well, because the first question people ask is, ‘Where’s her family? Why did nobody help her?’

Hot Chip have remixed Florence + The Machine's track 'Queen Of Peace'.

The electronic band have shared their reworked version of the song, which is taken from Florence + The Machine's most recent album 'How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful'.

Florence recently unveiled a video for the track. The 'Queen Of Peace' video was produced by long-time Florence collaborator Vincent Haycock, and filmed on the tiny island of Easdale in the Inner Hebrides, which has a population of less than 100 and an area of just 62 acres.

Listen to the Hot Chip remix below.

Hot Chip released their sixth album 'Why Make Sense?' in May of this year.

In an interview with NME, vocalist Joe Goddard spoke about his enjoyment working with his fellow bandmates. "I don't think I've ever questioned [the future of the band]," he said, before jokingly adding, "although, if I had some enormo mega-hit outside of Hot Chip, I'd obviously leave the band and pursue that".

Hot Chip are currently scheduled to tour the UK in October. They will play the following dates:

Bristol O2 Academy (October 13)
Portsmouth Pyramid Centre (14)
Glasgow Barrowland (16)
Manchester Albert Hall (17)

Janet Jackson Delivers A Timeless R&B Jam With “Unbreakable”

Janet Jackson is back, and we’ve been excited about the R&B Queen’s return for quite some time now. She’s been teasing us since the beginning of the summer, but now that fall’s approaching, we’re finally getting the goods.

Today (Sep. 3) Janet dropped the title track from her forthcoming album Unbreakable, her first release in seven years. “Unbreakable” is classic Janet — angelic vocals delivered with timeless R&B style. Homegirl has not lost her touch, it seems (but we already knew that).
